The New Ancient Greeks presents a series that explores characters from ancient Greek theater and myth. The sensibility is expressionist, often distorting form to convey heightened emotion. In my use of materials, East meets West--I apply sumi ink to kozo or xuan paper, with an overlay of spray-paint or pastels.
My long-time friend and mentor was one of the great Greek translators of the 20th century, David Grene. He was an Irish scholar, farmer, horseman, but most of all a poet of sufficient stature to render Sophocles or Aeschylus. Those who knew him found, while he lived and after he died, few to equal him.
